Virus Understanding Basics of a Hidden Threat

A virus is a microscopic infectious agent that can cause a wide range of diseases in animals, plants, and even bacteria. These tiny particles are not considered living organisms as they cannot replicate on their own and require a host to survive and reproduce. Despite their small size, viruses can have a significant impact on the health of individuals and entire populations.

Structure of a Virus :

Viruses are composed of genetic material, either DNA or RNA, surrounded by a protein coat known as a capsid. Some viruses also have an additional lipid envelope that surrounds the capsid. The genetic material inside the virus contains all the instructions necessary for the virus to replicate and infect a host cell.

The Life Cycle of a Virus :

The life cycle of a virus involves several stages, including attachment, penetration, replication, assembly, and release. The virus first attaches to a specific receptor on the surface of a host cell, which allows it to enter the cell. Once inside, the virus uses the host cell's machinery to replicate its genetic material and produce new virus particles. Transmission of Viruses :
